Academic Support Labs

Location: LRC, 4th Floor of Commerce

Tutoring is available at no cost to all enrolled students at Baltimore International College through the Academic Support Lab. The tutoring program offers one-on-one tutoring or tutoring in small groups.

Responsibilities of the student:

  • Attend all classes
  • Clarify needs with the tutor. Does the student need extensive tutoring or simply to go over a draft of a paper?
  • Bring all materials to their tutoring sessions - textbooks, classroom notes, syllabus, assignment sheet, graded assignments, quizzes or exams, etc., in order to assess and define tutoring needs.
  • Share your academic progress with the tutor
  • Express any academic concerns you have with the tutor
  • Complete an evaluation of tutoring when you complete your tutoring session(s).

A student may schedule multiple meetings with a tutor or tutoring group, or drop in for a one-time session. Computers loaded with tutorial programs in math and English reading/writing will also be available for individual use in the Academic Support Lab.

English Lab

The primary emphasis of English tutoring, provided by Professional or peer-tutors is placed on the reading and writing of paragraphs, short reports, essays, or research papers. Students seeking assistance in writing their own projects should come prepared to work on brainstorming and searching for interesting essay/report topics, organizing, and outlining, thesis statements, topical paragraphs, primary, secondary, and tertiary orders of expository ideas in paragraph content, and drafting of sentences in an essay/report format that accomplishes the writing project's purpose and fulfills its grading requirements. MLA formatting will also be included.

For students needing assistance with time management and homework priority planning issues that often impede progress in completing out-of-class English reading and writing, and other, assignments, tutors will address these needs as well, including daily and weekly planning with the aid of study skills materials and the standard College Success textbook.

Professor Kea Smith will be available in the English Lab on Monday and Wednesday from noon to 2 p.m., and on Friday from 10 a.m. to noon.

Math Lab

The Math Lab provides tutoring and academic support services to students enrolled in math courses, courses which use math and in technical courses. Professional and peer tutors provide assistance in all levels of mathematics ranging from basic math skills to statistics. The primary goals of the Math Lab are to reinforce concepts taught in the class, to provide students with the opportunity to work collaboratively, and to teach students to become independent learners.

Dr. Wong will be available in the Math Lab on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Spanish Lab

The Spanish Lab provides tutoring and academic support services to students enrolled in a Spanish course at the College.

Quiet Study Rooms

The LRC now has four “Quiet Study Rooms” available for student use on the 5th floor. To access these rooms, students will need to register at the Circulation Desk.
